Even Royalty Eats Locally

I'm encouraged to see that even royalty supports local eating, and at one of the most important events of their life...a wedding.  Celebrity Chef Alain Ducasse planned a "sustainable, local and ethical" meal for the nuptials of Prince Albert of Monaco and his bride, Charlene Wittstock, where nearly all of the ingredients came from within 6 miles of Monaco.  All the foods were caught or harvested within days and hours of the wedding...read more here.  My mouth waters reading about it - Local eating is fabulous!

Learning about Sustainable Eating on a Local Food Tour

A great idea I gleaned on a local food tour at Rachel Murphy's small farm.

On April 29th I had the pleasure of joining in on part of a local foods tour.  Russell Fox, a Friend's University Professor, organized the tour out of his passion for local eating and sustainable choices.  Russell taught an eight week seminar class called "The Politics of Food," and took his class on a local foods tour to learn more about sustainable eating in our area.  Everything you need to know, plus pictures, can be found on Russell's excellent blog post.  If you haven't already, be sure to watch the video about Leroy, a special friend of ours who always challenges me to live a more vibrant life.  

Good news!!  Russell plans to teach the course and do the tour again next year.  Anyone want to enroll at Friend's University just to join the class?!!!

Our introduction to local eating came through Dave and Cookie, an inspiring couple who live life passionately. They then introduced Chris and I to Leroy, a mechanic in the Amish community with an English degree from Yale.  Leroy is one of the more interesting people I have ever met, and I am always inspired after a dinner party or a discussion night where Leroy is involved.  He is passionate about local eating, and due to his background is pretty successful at it.  I recently learned that Channel 12 News produced a video about Leroy, and I'd love to share it with you to encourage you.  This Yale educated mechanic says that, "one of my goals in life is to make small dairy farmers successful."  How's that for being passionate about local eating, and providing the support for more of it to happen.  Watch and be inspired...
